Golf in Kilkenny

Courses in Kilkenny are some of the best in the world, no doubt. They’re usually packed during the warmer months, meaning time and booking space is limited. If you’re lucky to be here on a dry weekend in January, take the opportunity to enjoy a round of golf in one of the country’s top courses. Mount Juliet has hosted many international tournaments over the years and welcomed some of the finest golfers of our generation. Castlecomer Golf Club is situated 15 minutes from Kilkenny City, set 200-year-old forest with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. The 18-hole championship parkland course at Kilkenny Golf Club is playable year-round due to its sand-based greens.

Walking Trails in Kilkenny

Get out and stay active in Kilkenny as part of your New Year’s resolutions! There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad preparation – so wrap up well and explore some of the best walking trails in the county. Enjoy the easy Castlecomer Loop Walk, a one or two-hour hike through woodlands that will take no more than 2-hours through some of Kilkenny’s finest natural landscape. Woodstock Loop is a little more challenging with uneven terrain and slight hilly climbs but the 4.5km loop should take fit walkers around 90 minutes. The Nore Valley walk stretches from Kilkenny City to Inistioge following the River Nore. The walk has two sections which each have their merits and challenges. Do some research and let someone know your route before you leave.

Shopping in Kilkenny

If Christmas hasn’t fully exhausted your love of shopping, enjoy some retail therapy in Kilkenny. The city has a great selection of shops and stores, some local boutiques, and some international brands. January is a great time to shop with sales in almost every shop, getting rid of older stock to make way for the new season. It’s a great time to stock up on birthday presents for the year ahead or if you’re super organised, next Christmas! A must-do on your shopping trip is a visit to the Sunday markets in Mountain View. Shopping independently ensures these unique local sellers have a place to call home and allows us to find gifts we’d never find on the high street.

Museums in Kilkenny

If you’re mad for history or want to get to know our ancient city a little better, there are plenty of museums and heritage sites in Kilkenny to visit this January. Step back in time and see what life was like for a wealthy 17th-century merchant and his family in Rothe House and Gardens, a fascinating insight into how the other half lived. Kilkenny Castle is the grandest home in the city and the museum section is a fascinating collection of art and artifacts from years gone by. Butler Gallery is a superb collection of modern art, beautifully curated and housed in a historic building, restored to the highest standards. There are plenty of other museums in our relatively small city, just keep your eyes open!

Book your stay in Kilkenny this January and start your year as you mean to go on. We’d be delighted to welcome you, your family and friends to our comfortable, spacious hotel to start 2024 well.
